Robin Roberts Comes Out on Facebook

"Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts shared a very personal detail
in her Facebookyear-end post Sunday, December 29.
The longtime ABC news anchor, 53, addressed her sexuality publicly for
the first time, naming girlfriend Amber Laign in a reflective post on
her Facebook page.
"I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber,
and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together,"
she wrote, discussing the anniversary of her bone marrow transplant.
One year ago Sunday, Roberts reached the 100 day mark following the
risky procedure to treat myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood
disorder (in 2007 she was diagonosed with breast cancer and after
treatment went into remission). Her sister, who she also thanked in
the post, was her donor.

Roberts has been out to friends, family and co-workers for years, but
this is the first time she's publicly identified herself as gay.
Laign, who has been Roberts partner for 10 years, is a licensed
massage therapistwith a private practice in New York specializing in
patients dealing with injury.
Roberts' Sunday social media post, which had already received over
20.000 likes in just a few hours, featured words of inspiration as
well.
"Flashback 12/29/12....Hard to believe this was 1 year ago today..when
I reached a critical milestone of 100 days post transplant...and KJ
was finally allowed to come back home.
Reading this comforts me and I hope the same for you: 'If you are
depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are
living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the
present.'
At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude," she
wrote before wishing her followers a "Healthy and Happy New Year."
"GMA" issued a statement of support later in the day, saying, "We love
Robin and Amber, who we have all known for a long time. We were so
touched by her Facebook message today and so thankful for all the
loving support she has in her life."

Syria urged to step up efforts to ship chemical weapons

The ship's crew will conduct military drills at sea while waiting for
orders to proceed
The global chemical weapons watchdog has called on Syria to "intensify
its efforts" to help ship out its most dangerous chemical weapons.
A Norwegian frigate is ready to go to the Syrian port of Latakia to
collect the weapons for destruction.
The chemical watchdog said it was up to Syria to mitigate the risks
involved in transporting the stockpile to the port.
Syria agreed to abandon its arsenal to avert possible US military
action after a sarin nerve gas attack in August.
Under a deal brokered by the US and Russia, the complete elimination
of all chemical weapons material and equipment must be completed by
the first half of 2014.
The "most critical" chemicals include around 20 tons of the blister
agent sulphur mustard.
The arms are due to be taken to Italy, where they will be loaded on to
a US Navy ship and shipped into international waters for destruction
in a specially created titanium tank on board.

Syrian Helicopter Bomb Raids Kill 42 In Aleppo: Monitors

At least 42 people, including children, were killed on Sunday when
Syrian army helicopters dropped improvised "barrel bombs" in the
northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group said. The
British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said separate air
raids hit several districts in Aleppo, but the biggest toll was in
Hanano, east of the city. At least six children were among the dead.
"They hit a convoy of cars on a road in Hanano, many cars were
destroyed. There were civilians there," said the Observatory's Rami
Abdelrahman. Human Rights Watch said in a report over the weekend
that barrel bomb attacks had killed scores of civilians in Aleppo in
the last month. It described the attacks as illegal and said they had
hit residential and shopping areas. "The Syrian air force is either
criminally incompetent, doesn't care whether it kills scores of
civilians, or deliberately targets civilian areas," HRW senior
emergency researcher Ole Solvang said in the report. Barrel bombs are
explosive-filled cylinders or oil drums that are often rolled out of
the back of helicopters with little attempt at striking a particular
target. They are capable of causing widespread casualties and
significant damage. President Bashar al-Assad's forces, battling
rebels in a 2 1/2-year conflict that has killed more than 100,000
people, frequently deploy air power and artillery against rebel-held
districts across the country. They have been unable to recapture
eastern and central parts of Aleppo, which rebels seized in the summer
of 2012, but they have driven rebel fighters back from towns to the

Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel believes that his country will do
well at the World Cup by riding on the confidence of being reigning
Africa Cup of Nations champions.
The Super Eagles won their third African title in February and will go
to Brazil 2014 as the first reigning African champions since 2002 when
Cameroon held the title and also played at the World Cup.
Nigeria are drawn in Group F alongside perennial foes Argentina, Asian
high flyers Iran and debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina.
"I think being African champions has given us a huge lift. I think the
mentality of the team has changed in the past couple of years, we
believe now that we can go into every game and win," Mikel
toldGoalwhile receiving the 2013 Goal Nigeria Player of the Year
award, beating compatriots Vincent Enyeama, Emmanuel Emenike, Victor
Moses and Godfrey Oboabona to it.
The Super Eagles already have a foretaste of what to expect next year
after this summer's campaign in the Confederations Cup saw them win
against Tahiti and lose against Uruguay and Spain.
"If you look at the games we played in the Confederations Cup, we put
on a very good performance in all the games. We were unlucky in the
game against Uruguay, I think we should have beaten them by four or
five. If you look at the game against Spain, we played really well but
they just had that little bit of quality to get the goals," he said.
With Ghana's quarter final finish at South Africa 2010, the Super
Eagles are being touted by their fans to go a place better than their
neighbours in Brazil.
"I think the Africa Cup of Nations has given us a lot of belief to go
into the World Cup - I know we can do well," Mikel said.
Commenting on the return of manager Jose Mourinho to Chelsea, Mikel
said that with time the Blues will begin to win every game.
"It's been good, he's back," said Mikel. "We haven't hit the heights
that everyone wants us to hit but there have been changes, he's come
in with a different philosophy but still the mentality that we want to
win every game and he is putting that into all the players.
"It's going to take a bit of time but it's something we're working
towards. Hopefully we will start to hit our heights soon and be
playing consistently well but right now I think we're in a very good
position in the Premier League and the Champions League so if we can
pick the standard up even higher I think it will be a very successful
year," he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will soon pardon jailed
former tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Mr Putin said he had received a request from Khodorkovsky - in custody
for a decade - to pardon him on humanitarian grounds as his mother is

Khodorkovsky's representatives said they needed to meet him before
commenting but that the family would be "elated to see him finally
